Course Information:

Introduction to this course

This new and exciting course is for students who want to work as Fitness Instructors or Personal Trainers. It will help you develop a sound underpinning knowledge and understanding of gym instructing so you can grow into an outstanding practitioner. This is a nationally-recognised qualification within the fitness industry, allowing you to progress into the work place as part of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs).


Entry Requirements

You need a NVQ Diploma (Level 2) Instructing Exercise & Fitness or an equivalent qualification. A placement or current job within a fitness-based setting is desirable.


Career prospects

This course prepares you for a career in Personal Training. If you would like to develop your skills further, you may like to apply for the FdA Sports Coaching & Development available at the Yeovil College University Centre. This course is for people who want to develop a career in a fitness centre, professional sports club or other related establishment. It is also suitable for people who would like to become independent, self-employed personal trainers.


How will I be assessed?

Your competency will be assessed through practical demonstration, a portfolio of evidence and two written examinations.


Course content/units

You need to complete nine compulsory units to gain this qualification:


  • Anatomy and physiology for exercise and health
  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • Promote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreation
  • Motivate clients to maintain long term adherence to exercise and physical activity
  • Reflect on and develop own practice in providing exercise and physical activity
  • Evaluate exercise and physical activity programmes
  • Design, manage and adapt a personal training programme with clients
  • Deliver exercise and physical activity as part of a personal training programme
  • Apply the principles of nutrition to support client goals as part of an exercise and physical activity programme
