Course Information:

Introduction to this course

This is a qualification that will prepare you for a Junior Stylist role. You will learn a range of Hairdressing techniques and skills, covering units such as dressing hair, cutting, shampooing and conditioning and client consultation. This course is provided at Yeovil College's main campus and the North Dorset Technical College in Shaftesbury.


If required, you will study Maths and English alongside this course.


Entry Requirements

You need basic Maths and English skills. A Level 1 Hairdressing qualification is desirable.


Career prospects

Following successful completion of this course, you can progress to a Level 3 qualification such as the VTCT Diploma (Level 3) Hairdressing or Diploma in Women's Hairdressing. With further training at Level 3, you can progress to roles such as Salon Stylist, Hairdressing Assessor or Session Stylist and seek employment in sectors including cruise liners. If you would like to own your own salon, you may like to consider the Level 4 Certificate in Salon Management after your Level 3 course. This is also available through Yeovil College.


How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed using a combination of practical observation, theory-based online exams, assignments, project-based research tasks and a range of interactive activities.


Course content/units

You must complete six mandatory modules:


  • The art of dressing hair
  • Client consultation
  • Follow health and safety in the salon
  • Cut women's hair
  • Shampooing and conditioning the hair/scalp
  • Working in the hair industry

  • You also need to do at least on additional unit:


  • Colour and highlighting
  • The art of colouring
  • Plaiting and twisting
  • Perm and neutralise hair
